The tie

Classic men’s fashion can often feel like it is limited to a wardrobe of navy blazers, white shirts and khaki trousers. While the street-style pics from Pitti Uomo might be bursting with all the colours of the rainbow, and a few more too, us mere mortals might have a difficult time pulling off a purple jacket with the same panache as Nicola Ricci. Even though we may long for an opportunity to truly express our personality in the way we dress, our daily lives often simply won’t allow it. However, a truly fantastic way to transform an entire outfit is by playing with your neckwear. The tie can range in color and width from a slim playful orange paisley to a wider sober plain navy- all in seasonal materials; linen for summer, woolen knits for winter and that woven silk whenever you feel like it.

A while back we came across the young Italian entrepreneur Gianni Cerutti, who along with Marta Passagio, runs a bespoke tie-making business called Passagio Cravatte. Gianni and Marta follow the motto “we do not sell ties; we let you create them”, hence Passagio Cravatte does not offer ANY ready-made products at all. Neither do they have any official outlets or even an webshop, as the personal contact is of the essence in a bespoke product. The ties from Passagio Cravatte are true pieces of art, made to the highest standards of craftsmanship according to Neapolitan tradition and even to someone who is only a customer the love and passion for product shines through with great strength.

One of our associates here at DG6 Group recently received the result of his first order with Passagio Cravatte. Now, between us, we own ties from most of the major labels in the industry and in our humble opinion, Passagio’s products are some of, if not the most, beautiful pieces of design and craftsmanship we have ever feasted our eyes upon.

In the process of designing your own tie, you are able to select your own fabric from a vast number of options (we at the DG6 Group recommend that you have a look at the ancient silks, that we find especially beautiful). In addition to fabric, you can specify measurements, select from a number of construction techniques and for instance select what interlining you prefer. Gianni and Marta are sure to accommodate whatever need or wish you may have!

Since all of us might not be as skilled in the art of neckwear making as the team behind Passagio Cravatte, they of course guide you through the entire process, giving you suggestions and input on what options will work well together and which ones won’t. All the time, consideration is taken to your wishes, such as your height, if you prefer a larger or a smaller knot and if you wear a slightly longer or shorter tie.

Prices range from 135 to 265 euro depending on fabric, construction and so on. For instance, a seven fold tie in a superb vintage silk will cost you about 175 euro - at first glance, it may seem steep but is certainly money well spent.

Go ahead, you won’t regret it.
